I want to be able to use a woman whenever and however I want. And when I’m tired or bored or not interested, I simply want to put her away, lock her up in [her cell], get her out of my sight, out of my life. Leonard Lake, video confession
When investigators first went to the cabin, they found ‘a killing field, a mass graveyard,’ Deputy State Atty Gen Sharlene Honnaka said in her opening statement to an Orange County jury of 14 women and four men, which includes six alternates.
Defense lawyer William Kelley, an Orange County deputy public defender, sought to focus attention on Ng’s partner, Leonard Lake. Kelley described Lake, who killed himself after his arrest, as a mentally disturbed man with a ‘deep-seated hatred for women’.
The case, one of the longest and costliest in state history with a tab nearing $10 million so far, was transferred to Orange County because of pretrial publicity in Northern California. The trial is expected to last as long as a year. Ng faces the death penalty if convicted.
Most of the victims came from the San Francisco area, but they also included a Calaveras County family living nearby and a Garden Grove resident, Scott Stapley. Ng, who had fled to Canada, fought extradition and, once returned, delayed trial for years by filing myriad motions. He acted as his own attorney briefly and has had at least nine court-appointed defense attorneys. Los Angeles Times online article 27th October 1998
On June 2nd 1985 police were called to a lumber yard in San Francisco to apprehend a shoplifter. When they got there the suspect Charles Ng had fled but his partner Leonard Lake was still at the scene. Leonard Lake was arrested. Then in custody he swallowed a cyanide pill and died before he could answer for his crimes. World’s Most Evil Killers s2e5: Charles Ng & Leonard Lake, Pick TV 2018
