Andrew Evans served 25 years in prison for the murder of Judith Roberts. Yorkshire Ripper: The Secret Murders II, ITV 2022
At the time of the 1972 murder of 14-year-old Judith Roberts from nearby Tamworth, an English soldier called Andrew Evans was wrongly convicted for her death.
Evans from Staffordshire had confessed to murdering Roberts after being stationed in Lichfield, close to Tamworth. He handed himself over to the police because he had seen Roberts’ face in a dream, made a signed statement and did three days of interviews proving he would maintain his guilt.
Evans ended up serving 25 years in prison of his life sentence before being released in 1997.
Evans was released based on there being no evidence against him apart from his own words that were an admission of guilt. He got around this based on his anxiety and depression at the time that led Evans to have false memories, leading to the Court of Appeal to overturn his sentence in 1997.
