After twenty-two years police in Alabama finally reopen the murder investigation of Katherine Forster. ibid.
Justice came too late for 18-year-old Katherine Foster, who was murdered on the campus of the University of South Alabama in 1980. What is worse, the murderer was someone she knew very well: a trusted friend she had known since childhood: her roommate, Jamie Letson ...
In February 1980, student Katherine Foster went missing from her dorm room and was found in the nearby woods. Two days after her disappearance, a volunteer search group of students found her body not far from campus. She had been shot twice, but had no other signs of foul play. Her makeup was done neatly and her hair was brushed, and she was wearing a clean, stylish outfit.
There were few suspects in Foster’s murder and even fewer leads. The murder weapon was never found; although a 22-calibre pistol was found near the site of the body, it was not related to the slaying. In 1983, a security guard at the university committed suicide; his house included extensive information about the case as well as a hidden room atop the garage. However, he had an alibi, and was ruled out as a suspect.
At the time of her death, Foster lived with Jamie Letson, a girl she had known since high school. Foster’s boyfriend told police that in the weeks before Foster’s death, Letson was behaving strangely. She had stolen items from Foster and was depressed and anxious; Foster and her boyfriend, Tom Jaudon, had considered reporting her behavior to the school psychologist. Although Letson was questioned in Foster’s death, she was never officially named a suspect, and the case went cold.
By 2008, 47-year-old Letson was living in a Mississippi homeless shelter. Prosecutors discovered a letter that Letson wrote in Alcoholics Anonymous, referencing the murder and noting that she was obsessed with Jaudon. The letter stated this fact, saying ‘I’m sorry, but you were in my way’. Although defense attorneys claimed that the letter was made up by Letson, who had a propensity for lying, the woman was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
After Letson’s conviction, Foster’s family expressed relief and gratitude that justice for their daughter had finally been served. Foster’s mother noted that religion got her through the difficult years after her daughter’s murder. Although Letson maintained her innocence throughout the trial, she did confess to the murder on a videotape that was not admitted as evidence. Foster’s boyfriend claimed that he confronted Letson after Foster’s funeral, but his concerns went unheard. Crime Answers online
