Kennedy soon made the startling confession that he knew all about the murder of PC Gutteridge. For several months before the murder, he and Browne had used the garage as a front for disposing of stolen cars and other property. Together they had formed a two-man crime wave. ibid.
On this date in 1928, Frederick Browne and William Henry ‘Pat’ Kennedy hanged simultaneously (but at different prisons: Pentonville and Wandsworth, respectively) for murdering an Essex policeman.
Police constable George Gutteridge was found dead in September 1927 on a byway near Howe Green, dressed in his full police regalia, shot four times in the face while apparently in the process of writing up a miscreant motorist.
… The 'Gutteridge murder' investigation – a national sensation from the time the constable’s mutilated body was discovered – took several months to hone in on suspects Browne and Kennedy, known car thieves with some history of violence. But the real break in the case was, well, a case: a cartridge case from a .455 Webley recovered at the crime scene. It would be the most eloquent witness against Browne and Kennedy. Jerry Brudos was born on January 31st 1939 in Webster, South Dakota. He was the youngest of four boys and was psychologically damaged as a child by a mother who desperately wanted a girl child. She dressed him up like a Barbie Doll and he developed a weird fetish for women’s shoes and underwear.
Jerry’s family moved to Salem, Oregon and he soon began stealing women’s shoes and underwear at an early age. He would steal from neighbors and anywhere he could. When he was a teenager he began stalking young women and beating and choking them unconscious and stealing their shoes.
… Jerry would soon earn one of his nicknames by preying on women and killing them and collecting their body parts as souvenirs. Between 1968 and 1969 Brudos strangled four young women, the first being nineteen year-old Linda Slawson, whose foot he kept to model his shoe collection.

The depraved killer was local electrician Jerry Brudos. The 28-year-old appeared to be an upright family man but he was keeping a dark secret very close to home. Brudos killed four young women in the cruellest of circumstances before defiling their bodies for his own twisted pleasure.
