Portland – Cold-case detectives in Portland have solved a 1976 murder with fingernail scrapings collected in the oldest homicide case to be closed in Oregon using DNA evidence.
Detectives say the man who strangled 80-year-old Rosa Cinnamon in Portland died in prison, where he was serving time for two other killings.
Edward Delon Warren was sentenced to life for the 1979 murders of Ricky Hemphill and Charla Thompson in Gold Beach. Warren was 49 when he died in 2003.
The next year, a Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office investigator reopened the Cinnamon case while re-examining evidence and files for the cold-case unit.
At a news conference Tuesday, the investigator, Robbie Thompson, said Portland cold-case detectives typically go to the police property room to evaluate evidence and determine whether it is in good enough condition to be sent to the crime lab for analysis.
In this case, she said, the fingernail scrapings were dry and untouched, leaving them well-preserved for more than 30 years. The Seattle Times online article 29th April 2009
