We leave the prison but the prison never leaves us.  Paddy Hill, cited Real Crime: Picking Up the Pieces 2021

Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility, New York State: These girls are all facing up to three years in prison.  But they’ve been given a choice: instead of serving time in prison they’ve chosen the option of boot camp  where military discipline is used to change behaviour.  It’s called Doing Shock.  Stacey Dooley in the USA I: Girls Behind Bars, BBC 2017

There are [male] prison boot camps all over America.  ibid.

Up to 45 minutes of military-style exercise and still a mile to run before breakfast.  ibid.

Iowa Correctional Institution for Women, midwest America: to meet a load of women who have been sentenced to Life without parole.  In this prison there are more than 40 women who have been told they will be inside till they die.  Stacey Dooley: Locked Up With the Lifers, BBC 2020

The prison estimates that more than three-quarters of inmates suffered sexual or physical violence before they ended up here.  ibid.

But once you’re in here  inside – away from those who you pay to protect you, well then you’re just like everyone else.  And you are old now; no-one cares about you any more.  The world doesn’t give a flying fuck about knowledge.  About the old way.  About how things used to be.  How they should be.  The world has moved forward.  But you keep hanging on to the good old days when respect meant something.  We Still Steal the Old Way 2017 starring Patrick Bergin & Lysette Anthony & Julian Glover & Tanya Franks & Ian Ogilvy & Billy Murray & Nicky Henson & Vas Blackwood & Cristian Solimeno & Deborah Moore & Kieth-Lee Castle et al, director Sacha Bennett, opening scene, governor’s monologue

Any prisoner may be required by a prison officer to provide a sample used for the purposes of testing for the presence of a controlled or specified drug.  Prison I: Drugs, Channel 4 2018, screw

Her Majesty’s Prison Durham holds nearly 1,000 men.  As a remand prison it takes in men straight from police cells and the courts, locking up everyone from murderers to first-time offenders.  But mostly the crimes that bring men through these gates are drug-related.  ibid.

Phones are essential to the drugs trade in prison.  ibid.

Like most prisons, Durham has been badly hit by the psychoactive drug commonly known as Spice.  ibid.

It’s common for prisoners to try to take a nicking for friends and associates.  ibid.

‘It’s obviously the lads struggling a bit with mental health problems.’  Prison II: Mental Health, clean-up inmate

Durham: a growing number of men are coming in with mental health problems.  ibid.

All mental health services in the prison are provided by the NHS.  ibid.

Once in the prison he quickly seeks confrontation.  ibid.

In a lot of jails and prisons there are a lot of living circumstances and practices that go on within that are not addressed that people need to shed light on like solitary confinement, for example.  Maybe another form of punishment or segregation should be implemented to deal with inmates who break jail rules as opposed to inmates who cause severe harm to other inmates and correction officers because the mental health risk it poses are too great.  Kalief Browder

I won’t ask you to let me go again.  Just tell me why I’m here please.  I have a right to know why.  God, I’ve already been locked in here for two months.  Oldboy 2003 starring Choi Min-sik & Yoo Ji-tae & Kang Hye-jung & Kim Byeong-ok & Oh Tae-kyung & Yoo Yeon-seok & Woo Il-han & Yoon Jim-seo & Oh Dal-su et al, director Park Chan-wook, Oh Dae-su

If they had told me then it would be 15 years, would it have been easier to endure or harder?  ibid.

Actually, life is a bigger prison.  ibid.

Sometimes jail’s better than this place.  Trailer Park Boys s3e8: A Shit Leopard Can’t Change Its Spots, Ricky

I just need to get my story out.  I was going home from a party.  There was a guy saying I robbed him.  They said, We’re going to take you to the precinct.  They said most likely we’re going to let you go home.  But then I never went home.  Time: The Kalief Browder Story I: The System, Kalief, Netflix 2017

This happens every day.  And I feel like it’s got to stop.  ibid.  Kalief

What they’re being punished for is that they don’t have enough money to make bail.  That’s their crime.  ibid.  Van Jones, author & activist
