Most of modern-day Chile, Bolivia and Peru united under Inca rule.  Mankind: The Story of All of Us V, History Channel 2012

Incas: 800 miles south-east of Peru’s capital Lima near the shores of Lake Titicaca is a site that has mystified visitors from around the world ... the Gate of the Gods.  Ancient Aliens s2e1: Mysterious Places, History 2010

According to local legends these priest-kings known as space brothers came from other worlds.  Did they travel through the Gate of the Gods perhaps?  ibid.

This area of Peru is a focal point for UFO and extraterrestrial activity.  ibid.

High up in the mountains of Peru 850 miles north of the Gate of the God is a breathtaking 2-mile-long plateau.  Another area of reported high magnetic energy.  For centuries it’s been considered a powerful sacred place among the Inca people – it’s called Markawasi.  ibid.

The Andes Mountains, Peru.  Here at an elevation of 12,500 feet lie the dark waters of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable body of water in the Earth.  In August 2000 an Italian team of divers and archaeologists launched an underwater investigation of the legendary lake.  There submerged under one hundred feet of water the team uncovered traces of a paved road, a stone terrace and a wall nearly half a mile long.  Ancient Aliens s2e3: Underwater World

The mountains of Peru ... Here is a high river valley, amongst peaks towering over 20,000 feet, the Inca established their capital city of Cusco which thrived for over 300 years until Spanish conquistadors arrived.  Ancient Aliens s2e8: Unexplained Structures

Astonishing stonework: but not all of it is credited to the Inca ... The Inca themselves believe the site was constructed by an earlier, unnamed race of people led by a powerful god who descended from the skies ... Veracocha.  ibid.

According to local legend a bird was responsible for the seamless construction.  Legends say the winged creature carried a powerful chemical in its beak – a substance capable of melting stone.  ibid.

Stone cut with amazing precision.  Acoustic chambers designed for inter-planetary communication.  And architecture configured to harness cosmic energy.  Are these dramatic examples of advanced technology, or are they simply the astounding achievements of ancient engineers?  Ancient Aliens s3e6: Aliens and Ancient Engineers

Peru, Ollantaytambo: 9,000 feet above sea-level in an area the Inca people once called the Sacred Valley like the ruins of the ancient city of Ollantaytambo.  ibid.

But how could the earliest humans on Earth have produced such astonishing stonework where massive interlocking blocks fit together with such precision?  ibid.

‘These six giant slabs of red granite have stood here for thousands of years.’  ibid.  comment

Peru: The Nazca were a deeply religious and spiritual people.  Ancient Aliens s3e8: Aliens and Lost Worlds, History 2011

Nazca Lines: A series of enormous geoglyphs or ground drawings on to the desert floor.  The great geoglyphs are composed of dozens of spirals, triangle and trapezoids, as well as miles of zigzagging lines.  Huge drawings depict a humming bird, a spider, a killer whale and a human figure with owl-like eyes.  ibid.

In 1987 a 1,500-year-old archaeological site in the Peruvian desert was looted almost to extinction.  The site is called La Mina because it is the burial place of the Lord of La Mina, the ruler of an ancient sect known as Moche.  Its looting was possibly the worst desecration of a Peruvian archaeological site since the arrival of the Spanish five hundred years ago.  Art of the Heist s2e7: Trail of the Moche Gold

They took priceless objects  ceramic figures and bowls.  Most valuable of all was a superb gold headdress.  It shows the face of a sea-god.  ibid.

Mocha rulers were buried in state, the mummified body surrounded by a store of artefacts.  At the centre the ruler’s golden headdress.  ibid.

Peruvian authorities took action, but not against Beate.  Hoping to avoid an international incident they forced Barbie to leave the country immediately.  Nazi Hunters: Klaus Barbie, 2010

Peru is the world’s biggest producer of coca leaves.  Drugs Inc s2e1: Crack, National Geographic 2012

In the foothills of the Andes in northern Peru there’s a remote valley.  It’s a place still haunted by its past.  Long ago the people who lived in the Lambayeque Valley came to believe that building pyramids was essential to their survival.  They built two hundred and fifty pyramids.  One of the most impressive feats of engineering in the ancient world.  A vast valley of monuments that dominated the landscape.  But one day something terrible happened here and the civilisation disappeared.  Along with all two hundred and fifty pyramids.  Lost Cities of the Ancients: The Cursed Valley of the Pyramids, BBC 2006

Carbon dating shows that the first pyramid at Tucume was built around 1,100 A.D.  ibid.

And across the region scientists have found evidence of a supernatural force the ancient people of the Valley most feared.  When it struck it drove them to purify their cities by fire and abandon them for ever.  This region has been subject to some of the most extreme climate disasters on the planet.  Disasters the Lords and the Pyramids themselves, the source of magic and power, were supposed to protect the people from ... El Niňos.  They still strike in the region today.  ibid.

The Temple became the scene for a much darker series of offerings.  ibid.

The killing was soon to begin.  The one hundred and nineteen skeletons themselves give us a detailed description of what it would have been like to be ritually executed outside the temple ... Finally the victim’s heart was cut out.   But the sacrifice didn’t stop the Spanish advance.  ibid.

The cursed city had to be purified by flames.  ibid.

In 1911 young American explorer Hiram Bingham arrived in Peru’s sacred valley.  Bingham was looking for a fabled lost city ... A place overgrown and all but forgotten.  What Bingham saw astonished him.  Dr Jago Cooper, The Inca: Masters of the Clouds I: Foundations, BBC 2015

Their empire was the biggest in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans.  ibid.

These storehouses were an important logistical element to the growing of the empire.  ibid.

This was an empire of the mind.  ibid.

A catastrophic clash of two completely different cultures.  ibid.

Nothing thrills more than new discoveries of ancient civilisations.  For over a century now Peru has given us treasure after treasure.  It’s a vast country of extremes, from tropical rainforest to the dry deserts of the Atacama.  In one of the remote northern regions lies the most mysterious kingdom in Peru.  Jago Cooper, Lost Kingdoms of South America I: People of the Clouds, BBC 2013

The remnants of Chachapoya culture are among the most stunning and least understood in South America.  ibid.

The first Chachapoya had rafts and canoes.  ibid.

They could trade with the peoples downstream in the Amazon basin.  ibid.

The mountains might appear to be a massive obstacle to the Chachapoya.  ibid.

Their beautiful textiles.  ibid.

A great source of pride in Peru.  And they are also a reminder that the cultures of South America thrived long long before Europeans appeared on the horizon.  ibid.

On the north coast of Peru, between the Pacific ocean and the Andes, is a vast desert.  For over four hundred and fifty years this was home to a kingdom whose rise and fall is one of the greatest untold stories of the Americas.  At its heart was a city – Chan Chan.  Dr Jago Cooper Lost Kingdom of South America IV: Kingdom of the Desert

They began building the city in the tenth century.  ibid.

For the Chimu, hierarchy was seen as pre-ordained.  ibid.

Before the Chimu were the Moche.  ibid.

Irrigation canals were carved into the earth ... Importing the soil was only the start of the people’s ingenuity.  ibid.

The Inca built an empire without rival.  It spanned almost an entire continent.  The Secrets of the Incas, 2000

Yet the Inca left no written record.  ibid.

Following tantalising legends, Spanish Conquistadors invaded Peru in 1532.  They came in search of one thing: gold.  ibid.

When I set out to write for the people of today and of the future, about the conquest and discovery that our Spaniards made here in Peru, I could not but reflect that I was dealing with the greatest matters one could possibly write about in all of creation as far as secular history goes.  Where have men ever seen the things they have seen here?  And to think that God should have permitted something so great to remain hidden from the world for so long in history, unknown to men, and then let it be found, discovered and won all in our own time!  Pedro Cieza de Leon, Chronicles of Peru
