★ Suicide (I)

When she [Mary Wollstonecraft] followed him as far as London she found a new mistress.  On a rainy night in October 1795 she walked around Putney long enough to make sure her best dress was heavily saturated, then she jumped off the bridge into the Thames leaving a note  ‘Let my wrongs sleep with me’.  But she was not to be allowed her poetic suicide.  A boatman pulled her out.  She was thirty-seven and she seemed to have lost everything except her child: her faith in revolution, in the virtue of the people, her belief of the possibility of an independent woman’s life; the goodness of nature must have seemed a cruel joke.  Simon Schama, A History of Britain s3e1: Forces of Nature, BBC 2002

On 14th January 2008 Jonny Benjamin came to Westminster Bridge with the intention of throwing himself off.  A stranger stepped out of the rush hour crowd and talked him out of it – his words stopped Johnny taking his life.  The Stranger on the Bridge, Channel 4 2015

Some people have suspected that the Secret Service may have at least encouraged him [Turing] to commit suicide.  And that theres even the slight suspicion apparently in some circles that they might have contrived to murder him on the grounds that he was too big a security risk.  That he knew so much and yet he would go abroad to see some man – I can imagine them being quite nervous about that.  But somehow it seems to me to be farfetched.  Professor I J Good, interview

You did not fear death.  You stepped in its path, but without really desiring it: how can one desire something one doesn’t know?  You didn’t deny life but affirmed your taste for the unknown, betting that if something existed on the other side, it would be better than here.  Édouard Levé, Suicide
