The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies. The Vatican this week attacked America’s nuns for spending too much time working to help the poor and fight poverty, and not spending enough time attacking same-sex marriage. The criticism, considered formal disciplinary action against the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), which represents over 55,000 nuns in the United States, also labeled as ‘grave and a matter of serious concern’ that the nuns are not sufficiently denouncing abortion ... and women’s ordination. The Washington Post article 19th April 2012, ‘Vatican Attacks US Nuns for Fighting Poverty Instead of Gay Marriage’
I was appalled and shocked that Bush used the State of the Union to attack same-sex marriages and indicated that he would support a constitutional amendment. Jean O’Leary
There is ample evidence to show that children raised by same-gender parents fare as well as those raised by heterosexual parents. More than 25 years of research have documented that there is no relationship between parents’ sexual orientation and any measure of a child’s emotional, psychosocial, and behavioural adjustment. These data have demonstrated no risk to children as a result of growing up in a family with one or more gay parents. Conscientious and nurturing adults, whether they are men or women, heterosexual or homosexual, can be excellent parents. The rights, benefits, and protections of civil marriage can further strengthen these families. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2006
New Rule: Gay marriage won’t lead to dog marriage. It is not a slippery slope to rampant inter-species coupling. When women got the right to vote, it didn’t lead to hamsters voting. No court has extended the equal protection clause to salmon. And for the record, all marriages are ‘same sex’ marriages. You get married, and every night, it’s the same sex. Bill Maher, New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer
If you oppose marriage equality, you’re in a shrinking minority, according to a new survey. A record 59 percent of Americans now support same-sex marriage, an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday showed. That’s a 27 percent increase since 2004 and significant progress from just three years ago when 53 were in favor, according to a release sent to The Huffington Post. The Huffington Post online article 5th March 2014, ‘Support for Gay Marriage Surges to 59 Percent, New Poll Says’
Proposition 8 built a constitutional wall around marriage and excluded gays and lesbians from access to the most important relation in life. The Case Against 8, case in court Theodore Olson, HBO 2014

In 2008 the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to get married. 18,000 same-sex couples were married throughout the state. Six months later, voters passed Proposition 8, a ballot initiative which defined marriage as between one man and one woman in California. A federal lawsuit was filed on behalf of two couples challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8. ibid. captions
