They have ruled from the shadows, you see.  And they call themselves the Guardians of the Secrets of the Ages.  And their first religion was called astrotheology.  Or the worship of the heavens.  And their first object of worship was the Sun.  The second object of worship was the Moon.  And everywhere you see the mystery school of the ancient religion you will see the symbols of the sun and the moon also known as Osiris and Isis.  For the religion of the mystery schools they believe that man was held prisoner in the Garden of Eden by an unjust and vindictive God.  And that man was not told by this unjust and vindictive God that he could have the same powers.  And man was set free from the bonds of ignorance by Lucifer and his agent Satan, and many believe that the two are the same ... And that through the gift of intellect man may become God.  Bill Cooper

A method of deciding exactly who is to become an adept decided during initiation by asking the candidate to spit upon the Christian cross.  If the candidate refuses, the members congratulate him and tell him, ‘You have made the right choice, as a true adept would never do such a terrible thing.’  The newly initiated might find it disconcerting, that he/she never advances any higher.  If instead the candidate spits upon the cross, he/she has demonstrated a knowledge of one of the mysteries and soon will find him/herself a candidate for the next higher level.  The mystery is that religion is but a tool to control the masses.  Bill Cooper, Secret Societies/New World Order

Knowledge (or wisdom) is their only god, through which man himself will become god.  The snake and the dragon are both symbols of wisdom.  Lucifer is a personification of the symbol.  It was Lucifer who tempted Eve to entice Adam to eat of the tree of knowledge and thus free man from the bonds of ignorance.  The WORSHIP (a lot different from STUDY) of knowledge, science, or technology is Satanism in its purest form, its secret symbol is the all-seeing eye in the pyramid.  ibid.

They are practising Satanists.  In American 76% of people identify themselves as members of a Christian faith ... So-called devil worshippers have existed for centuries.  American Outsiders: Secret Passions, 2013

Sorry about the noise.  Do you worship the devil yourself?  Rab C Nesbitt s2e6: Life Has Meaning, devil worshipper to carpet delivery man, BBC 1992

In the 1980s stories about a vast conspiracy of organised Satanists sweeps the media.  Known as the Satanic Panic, Christian groups allege mass Satanic abuse of children and tens of thousands of kidnappings.  The History of the Devil, 2007

Much like Christians today, fringe groups including some satanic sects believe in Satan’s existence and that he will dominate the world as it approaches Armageddon.  One of the more moderate groups is the Church of Satan founded in 1966 with many adherents across the US.  Their beliefs tend more toward hedonism with carnal pleasures leading to greater self-knowledge.  Nostradamus Effect: Satan’s Army, History 2009

It is a very secular, rational philosophy based on responsible self-indulgence.  Its core is certainly atheism.  There’s no faith in it.  There’s no God.  It’s all based on human nature.  And really human behaviour.  Bryan Moore, reverend Church of Satan

Picture a Satanist, and you might imagine someone dressed in a black cloak and mask engaging in bizarre violent rituals involving the blood of dead animals and an inverted pentagram etched onto the ground in chalk.  At some point in this vision, Satan might even burst through the floor in a flurry of fire and bring an end to the world.  All in all, a Satanist is not the sort of person youll be calling up to have dinner with your mum anytime soon.

But those are the sorts of stereotypes that Ashley S Palmer, a reverend of the Church of Satan, wants to debunk.

Satanists may not sound like the friendliest types, but the 31-year-old who lives on the south-east coast of England with his wife and baby daughter is happy to explain why his religion is misunderstood.  It has nothing to do with devil worship, he stresses. The religion, founded just over 50 years ago by US author and musician Anton Szandor LaVey has much more to do with atheism and libertarian ideals of the freedom to indulge, muddled together with a dash of Machiavellian pragmatism.  Independent online article 2 June 2017, ‘A Satanist on why everything you think you know about his religion is wrong’

Satanism: to some it’s a religion as valid as Christianity; to others it is a dangerous and subversive cult.  Whatever the truth is there are thousands of devotees of Satan and it’s becoming more and more popular thanks to the internet.  Jamie Theakston’s Forbidden History s3e5: Inside the Cult of Satan, Yesterday 2016

Perhaps the most widely-known aspect of Satanism is the Church of Satan itself which was founded by a man called Anton LaVey in America in 1966.  Today it has thousands of members across the world.  ibid.

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason;

The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions;

One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone;

The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend.  To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo ones own;

Beliefs should conform to ones best scientific understanding of the world.  One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit ones beliefs;

People are fallible.  If one makes a mistake, one should do ones best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused;

Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought.  The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.  ibid.  seven tenets of belief of Satanic Temple

As Satanists we were told that the Illuminati were very powerful satanic spiritual beings, which is not entirely false because the Illuminati is possessed by these beings.  Stephen Dollins

In modern Luciferianism Lilith is considered a consort and/or an aspect of Lucifer, and is identified with the figure of Babylon ... When she and Lucifer mate, they form an androgynous being called Baphomet, or the goat of Mendes, also known in Luciferianism as the God of Witches.  The Church of Lucifer
