October 4th 1967, Nova Scotia, Canada: In the remote fishing village of Shag Harbour residents see mysterious lights appear in the sky.  Then, an apparent crash ... It crashes into the ocean.  UFO: Alien Invasion s1e4

There were many strange lights over Nova Scotia that night.  But for the people of Shag Harbour those lights would fall to the Earth.  And the eyes of the world would fall upon Shag Harbour.  The New Roswell The Shag Harbour Incident

On October 4th 1967, the night of the UFOs, Chris Styles was twelve years old.  He was one of dozens of people who saw strange lights over Nova Scotia that night.  ibid.

No-one seemed to know what it was that crashed into Shag Harbour.  ibid.

Residents of Shag Habour claimed they watched as the military hauled something out of the Harbour.  ibid.

Did the military know that there were in fact two UFOs in Shag Harbour but that they had left the impact site submerged coming to rest off the coast near a top secret army base?  ibid.

The Shag Harbour incident is very important because there are very few cases where we have some good indication that something came down.  Stanton Friedman

In 1967 a dramatic UFO incident upended Shag Harbour’s quiet ways … Suddenly the luminous object turned on its side and plummeted into the harbour waters … A small gathering of spectators: the witnesses stood and stared mesmerised by the strange light on the water.  Then just as suddenly as it had appeared it vanished … A thick layer of an unknown substance: ‘a great bubbly foam and it was yellow’ … This left the small town of Shag Harbour to become big news … ‘The UFOs start moving again while still submerged under the water and move down the coast to Nova Scotia and over the Gulf of Maine: once in the Gulf of Maine they surface and fly away.  This was a genuine UFO event.’  UFO Files s1e9: UFOs: Then and Now? Cause for Alarm, History 2004

Shag Harbour: According to government records, the object travelled from south to north along the Nova Scotia coastline.  At one point it stops and hovers, then at approximately 11.20 p.m. it enters the water at a forty-five degree angle three hundred yards offshore.  UFO Files s3e2: Deep Sea UFOs

It’s a mystery that has haunted a community for decades.  Something strange was seen plunging into the sea off Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada on the evening of 4th October 1967.  There are dozens of eye-witnesses but few explanations.  Local fishermen, the coast guard and Navy divers searched but were unable to find any evidence of the crash.  UFO Files s3e5: Canada’s Roswell, History 10th March 2006

But an investigation 25 years later produced declassified government documents and some startling revelations.  ibid.

4th October 1967: Something unusual was happening in the skies over the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.  During the waning hours of the evening, dozens of people were mystified by a series of inexplicable lights in the sky.  It’s a date that would later become known as the Night of the UFOs.  ibid.

Other calls started pouring in.  The calls came from nearby Bear Point, Cape Sable Island and Maggie Garon’s Point all reporting the same thing.  ibid.

The fishermen realised that the strange foam was connected to whatever had crashed in the harbour.  ibid.

Even more puzzling than the foam was the lack of any debris at the site.  ibid.

Reports had come in from witnesses all over Nova Scotia that night.  ibid.

The diver informed [Chris] Styles that a flotilla of US Navy and Canadian ships had anchored over the two objects at Shelburne.  ibid.

Shag Harbour: The first indication of this mysterious occurrence would come from local residents who noticed strange orange lights in the sky on the night of October 4, 1967.  Most witnesses agreed that there were four orange lights that evening.  Five teenagers watched these lights flash in sequence, and then suddenly dive in a 45 degree angle toward the water’s surface.  The witnesses were surprised that the lights did not dive into the water, but seemed to float on the water, approximately one-half mile from the shore.

Witnesses at first thought they were watching a tragic airplane crash, and quickly reported as much to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which was located at Barrington Passage.  Coincidentally, RCMP Constable Ron Pound had already witnessed the strange lights himself as he drove down Highway 3 en route to Shag Harbour.  Pound felt that he was seeing 4 lights, all attached to one flying craft.  He estimated the craft to be about 60 feet long.

Constable Pound made his way to the shore to get a closer look at the phenomenal sight.  He was accompanied by Police Corporal Victor Werbieki, Constable Ron O’Brien, and other local residents.  Pound clearly saw a yellow light slowly moving on the water, leaving a yellowish foam in its wake.  All eyes were glued on the light, as it slowly either moved too distant to be seen, or dipped into the icy waters.

Coast Guard Cutter #101 and other local boats rushed to the spot of the sighting, but by the time they arrived, the light itself was gone. However, the crewmen could still see the yellow foam, indicating that something had possibly submerged.  Nothing else could be found that night, and the search was called off at 3:00 a.m.  UFO Casebook online article

It’s the one case where something came down out of the sky and crashed into the water.  It made a noise.  It made a flash.  Chris Styles

The UFO was still moving on the surface of the water.  The object also appeared to be leaving a trail of dense yellow foam.  Chris Styles

The more you investigate the Shag Harbour story the more detail you get.  It never seems to dry up.  There’s always another detail that comes up.  There’s always another witness that comes forward.  Doug Ledger

The classification was, from the outset, above Top Secret, so the vast majority of US officials and politicians, let alone a mere allied minister of defence, were never in the loop ... The time has come to lift the veil of secrecy and let the truth emerge so there can be a real and informed debate about the one of the most important problems facing our planet today.  Paul Hellyer, former Canadian Minister of Defence, 2005

Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia: ‘Norm [Smith] arrived at the shore.  By that time there’s 14, 15, 16 people there including the Mounties.  Everybody standing there looking at the water,  looking at this dark object with a pale yellow light on the top … They don’t find bodies or wreckage; instead they discover something much stranger [thick green foam].  Close Encounters s1e7, Netflix 2024
