They’re getting more and more complicated. Now, are the people in the UFOs getting smarter? Are they getting more artistic? Is their message getting more complicated? And really if you were someone in a UFO and you wanted to leave a message, wouldn’t you go to the lawn of the White House and make a crop circle? James Randi

How do the hoaxers get away with it? And why aren’t hospitals overflowing with them peppered with buckshot by angry farmers? Arthur C Clarke’s Mysterious World
Several eyewitnesses to crop circles testify that they have seen strange balls or clouds of light in and around crop circles as they were being formed, and even some time after they were formed. In an article by Linda Moulton Howe, she quotes a witness who saw a bright light that seemed to come up out of the ground after he and a friend entered a large crop formation known as the Galaxy in 1994: ‘It was so bright, it lit up the hills in the background. It was bluish-white in colour and about as big as the formation, fifty to sixty meters wide. The bright light formed some sort of cloud and it changed shape continuously as it hovered over the formation. After a couple of seconds, it rose at slow speed and disappeared into the darkness. My friend and I were totally flabbergasted!’
One of the most controversial crop circle videos, known as the Oliver’s Circle Crop Circle Video, appears to show several swirling balls of light actually creating a formation in a field of grain. The video has been shown on TV documentaries several times. Although there are still some diehard believers, most experts who have analysed the video concluded that it was a hoax – a clever computer-generated effect.
Another video shot in August, 1999, seems to show a ball of light at the Barbury Castle ‘dolphins’ crop circle.
Urm Greene says that he had video evidence on a CD-ROM he is offering that shows ‘a British Army helicopter chasing and finally catching up to an small, glowing, pulsating UFO within a crop circle field’. About.com Crop Circles: Best Evidence
For the last three hundred years crop circles have appeared all over the world ... Some crop circles are hoaxes; but melted meteor particles showing radiation exposure which are normally found in outer space have been found by scientists at the core of some circles. Crop Circles: Mysteries in the Fields
By the late 1980s hundreds of crop circles had been documented and researched. And each year they multiplied and developed in structure. ibid.
Many theories have been presented. Some scientists believe the answers may be found in little-understood Earth phenomena. These high atmospheric energy discharges are known as red sprites and blue jets – they were only discovered in the 1990s. Perhaps a cousin of sprites or blue jets is responsible for crop circles. Theories involving plasma vortices seem to dominate. ibid.
Just a few hundred yards from a crop circles what appears to be a silver object hovers over some fields. In this video the moving white objects are seen by some to be UFOs creating designs in the corn field. Strange But True?
There were two balls of light that came over this one area of field, and the crop went down in a matter of seconds. Denni Clarke, author Crop Circle Wisdom
In the 1980s some people thought that crop circles were imprints of flying saucers. As designs became more complex people began to believe they contained alien messages. Danny Dyer, I Believe in UFOs, BBC 2010
I’m on my way to look at a very British phenomenon [Wiltshire] that’s been causing a bit of a rumble for years. I’d honestly like to think they are made by aliens. That’s just me. That’s the way I am like. I want to believe in that fantasy ... This part of Britain is the world’s crop circle hotspot. There’s been nearly seventy already this year. And Garry’s taking me up to one of the biggest there’s even been. And it only came down a couple of nights ago. Wow! You feel something’s special has been happening here, don’t ya? A little bit yeah. Just how would you do that as a human being? It’s just ridiculous. What sort of machine would you use? ibid.
At the heart of a lot of genuine sightings of UFOs are these balls of light cavorting around in the night sky. Paul Deveraux, earth scientist
In a scientific age one mystery captures the imagination like no other. Every year crop circles appear as if from nowhere. The Truth Behind ... Crop Circles, 2010
Crop circles appear around the world but the large majority are found in Wiltshire, a small corner of south-west England. ibid.
Wiltshire is cloaked in centuries of mystery ... Often discovered near sacred sites, the circles appear between April and August when crops are most abundant in the fields. ibid.
The earliest representation of a crop circle occurs in a wood cutting from 1678: known as the Mowing Devil, it appears to depict a horned creature making a circle in a field of oats. ibid.
They saw something in the field next to the famous monument [Stonehenge] ... One of the largest crop circles ever produced. Known as the Julia Set it comprised one hundred and fifty-one circles varying from one to fifty feet in diameter. The pattern measured an incredible nine hundred and twenty feet long and hypnotised the world. ibid.
And it’s not just nitrate levels; radiation plays a part too. ibid.
What was most extraordinary was that it appeared seemingly within a forty-five minute window in broad daylight in full view of the A303 road and Stonehenge. Andy Thomas, crop circle researcher
It’s a mystery because there is evidence that simply cannot be explained away. Andy Thomas
One of the peripheral strange phenomena that we’ve had around crop circles over the years has been the sightings of these small white balls of light ... They’re a phenomenon in their own right. Andy Thomas
If you follow the evidence, if you go where the evidence leads, I believe this is a very significant phenomenon. And I think what’s happening now is we’re on the brink of a paradigm shift of our world view. Dr Jude Currivan, cosmologist
Already this year there have been a large proportion of circles that are literally impossible to draw, to draw freehand. There is just no way that they could have been formed in any kind of a mechanical way. The geometry is just too supple and too perfect. Richard Winterborne, professional healer
There at first sight look quite complicated. But in fact they are built up out of a large number of simple pieces. And actually those simple pieces are themselves arranged in a quite simple way. It’s really not terribly complicated geometry. Tom Coates, Department of Mathematics Imperial College London
They’ve been around for hundreds of years. Certainly back to the seventeenth century. Robert Hulse, crop circle researcher
It could have something to do with the ley line system which seems to be concentrated very much in the Wiltshire area. Robert Hulse
Less than 5% are genuine in our opinion. David A Cayton, crop circle researcher
This circle in a Wiltshire field is just one of two hundred such markings to have been discovered in the last six weeks. Robert Moore, News at Ten report 2nd July 1990
So you have the idea of these Earth energies, these ancient structures, and then the crop circles are appearing round them. And many of the crop circles appear to be some kind of signals, ancient writing. David Childress, author Technology of the Gods
Crop Circles: Much like the famed Nazca Lines of Peru the designs were only visible from the air. Ancient Aliens s1e3: The Mission, History 2010
‘Some people said they saw light in the fields at night.’ ibid. comment
In 1991 the noted bio-physicist Dr William Levengood put forward a startling new theory. After spending 10 years studying crop circles, sites and samples, he concluded that they were created by a complex energy system which he called a ‘spinning plasma vortex’ that comes down from somewhere high up in the atmosphere. ibid.
Strange symbols found on opposite sides of the Earth. Binary code appearing in crop formations. And geographical alignments that defy explanation. Imagine if around the world there were messages concealed within ancient texts, symbols and structures. And what if they have left for us to uncover by extraterrestrial beings? Ancient Aliens s9e7: Alien Messages
SETI: 27 years later there appeared to be a response. August 2001, Hampshire in England: Next to the Chilbolton Observatory, 2 crop formations appeared in a field. Both were unlike any ever found. ibid.
