★ End of the World (I)

Their calendar stops dead on a very specific date: December 21st 2012.  Mayan year Zero.  Surely it’s just a story?  Samuel L Jackson, How Will the World End? Discovery 2011

What scientists are looking out for are the five cataclysmic events most likely to devastate our world: an ark storm, an asteroid impact, a mega-quake, a mega-tsunami and a super-volcano.  ibid.

An ark storm will rage for more than a month.  ibid.

To scientists it’s an impact event; to everyone else it’s Armageddon.  ibid.

A child born today stands one chance in twenty of seeing a large asteroid hit the Earth.  ibid.

The Anti-Christ.  The false messiah.  A child of Satan.  The word Anti-Christ first appears in the New Testament.  In this ancient text a prophecy states that the Anti-Christ, the beast, will come to seduce mankind.  Believers say he will usher in the end of days.  Armageddon.  Nostradamus Effect s1e1: The Third Anti-Christ, History 2009

Newton was convinced that hed uncovered a secret Biblical puzzle that had been concealed in sacred texts and that he alone understood when Armageddon would come.  Nostradamus Effect s1e5: The Apocalypse Code

According to interpreters Newtons papers show that his first step into Biblical decoding involved passages that described the Temple of Solomon.  The temple prophecies are a critical clue to all of Newtons doomsday calculations, and how he arrived at 2060 for the date of Armageddon.  ibid.

A temple of geometric precision and symmetry built in one of the holiest places on Earth.  For many this reconstruction of an ancient monument is the fulfilment of a prophecy.  Its location is Israel.  The year 2060.  The prophet who foresaw this is one of the greatest scientists who ever lived.  He forewarned that completion of this great temple would herald the arrival of the Anti-Christ and the end of the world ... Isaac Newton was one of the worlds greatest scientific geniuses and the father of Psychics.  ibid.

The mystery centres around a manuscript in Rome called the Nostradamus Vatinicia Code.  The prophecies of Nostradamus.  Since the title bears the renowned prophets name, many believe he must be the author.  But no record exists of Nostradamus ever publishing such a manuscript.  And so the identity of the writer remains an open question.  Nostradamus Effect s1e6: Son of Nostradamus

Of the eighty images said to foretell our doom seven form a code specifying the time of the Apocalypse.  ibid.

Does the value in the manuscript lie purely in its provenance?  For years it was assumed the author was the most renowned seer of all: Nostradamus the Elder.  But the evidence suggests this may not in fact be the case.  The creator of this work that portends Armageddon – father or son?  ibid.

Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, exposes a chilling timeline.  Many accept it as a countdown, chronicling Gods masterplan to end the world.  The markers of this timeline are the seven seals.  Some say these seals are being broken today.  Nostradamus Effect s1e7: Secrets of the Seven Seals

1917: just outside the village of Fatima, Portugal, three shepherd children claim to experience visions of the Virgin Mary.  According to legend, the apparition shared with them three cryptic secrets about mankinds dark future.  Shrouded in mystery for eighty-three years, the final part of the prophecy may have foretold the ultimate cataclysm: a nuclear third world war in our lifetime.  Nostradamus Effect s1e8: Fatimas Lost Prophecy

Does the devil really exist?  More than 70% of all Americans believe that he does.  And a third of them fear his power will ultimately consume the world.  Biblical prophecies predict Satan will seize power in what is known as the end times.  Nostradamus Effect s1e9: Satan’s Army

But the great pyramid might be just one expression of this purported prophecy.  Some believe these hieroglyphs from a text called The Book of the Dead also foretell that the end is nigh.  There may even be a third prophetic source: a recently rediscovered document called the Kolbrin Bible some interpreters of which believe predicts a nuclear holocaust.  Nostradamus Effect s1e10: Doomsday Hieroglyphs

Believers do not agree among themselves whether the virtuous will be taken before or after the Tribulation.  Nostradamus Effect s1e12: The Rapture

Islam teaches that believers in Allah will find refuge with the Prophet Muhammad, protected from a wind of destruction that will kill all those left behind.  ibid.

Hopi traditions characterises the worlds end as a day of purification, when the Hopi will be flown to other planets in ships without wings.  ibid.

The Hopi believe that just before the end of the world there will be a period of intense trial marked by devastating social, environmental and political problems, as well as bouts of extreme weather.  Nostradamus 2012, 2009

The World shall rock to and fro.  The white man will battle against other people in other lands – with those who possessed the first light of wisdom.  There will be many columns of smoke and fire ... will cause disease and a great dying.  Hopi prophecy

You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.  Hopi prophecy

In the final days of misfortune, in the final days of tying up the bundle of the thirteen katuns on 4 Ahau, then the end of the world shall come and the katun our Fathers will ascend on high ... These valleys of the Earth shall come to an end.  For those katuns there shall be no priests ... I recount to you the words of the true gods when they shall come.  Mayan Book of Tizimin

Ka hinga te arai (The curtain will fall or the veil will dissolve)  Maori prophecy

But there’s another mysterious book that many believe contains other cataclysmic predictions.  Its dark secrets are yet to be revealed.  Historians, linguists and code-breakers are attempting to decipher its meaning  what will they reveal?  Experts worldwide are fascinated by this: Item MS408 in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, its current home.  Weird or What? s1e3: Cocaine Mummies, Discovery 2010

It’s started.  There isn’t much time.  Legion 2010 starring Paul Bettany & Dennis Quaid & Lucas Black & Tyrese Gibson & Adrianne Palicki & Charles S Dutton & Jon Tenney & Kevin Durand & Willa Holland & Kate Walsh & Doug Jones et al, director Scott Stewart

Your fucking baby’s gonna burn.  ibid.

Just because it’s the end of the world don’t mean you got to starve.  ibid.

The dogs of Hell will be unleashed.  ibid.

You wanted to live like one of them; now you’ll die like one of them.  ibid.

April 11th 1862: I firmly believe that before many centuries more, Science will be the master of man.  The engines he will have invented will be beyond his strength to control.  Some day Science will have the existence of mankind in his power, and the human race commit suicide by blowing up the world.  Henry Brooks Adams

Arya Stark: You said we’d meet again.

Melisandre: And here we are.  At the end of the world.  Game of Thrones s8e3: The Long Night ***** HBO 2019

There will at the very end be a great climactic battle between the forces of good and evil.  It will be like streams of blood.  So many of people will die there.  There is no doubt a majority of the Earth’s inhabitants will lose their lives.  Texe Marrs

Through the ages he has been given many names.  The Lawless One.  The Beast.  The Arch-Deceiver.  But most people know him as the Anti-Christ.  He is at the heart of an apocalyptic vision of starvation and slaughter that many Christians accept as true.  Decoding the Past: The Antichrist, History 2006

Above all he represents a paradox.  The Anti-Christ is the embodiment of evil.  But believers look for his coming with a frisson of anticipation.  Fact or fiction his role in the Christian religion is clear: he is Satan’s human emissary on Earth.  ibid.

The transitional period is called the Tribulation by adherents of Biblical prophecy.  It’s part of a system of Biblical interpretation called Dispensationalism, which is favoured by some evangelicals and fundamentalists.  According to their theory there will be a seven-year period that culminates in unspeakable suffering and dominated by Christ’s antithesis  the Anti-Christ.  ibid.

It can be argued that Zoroaster articulated an end-of-time scenario that’s similar to what later appeared in the Bible as the final duel between good and evil.  The supernatural end-of-time battle is the central core of the drama of the Anti-Christ.  Some scholars think Zoroastrianism influenced Judaism and therefore Christianity.  ibid.

The Book of Revelation speaks to us across the centuries.  It is a fascinating but obscure text teeming with fantastical images of sea monsters and seven-headed beasts.  ibid.

As is the case with the Book of Daniel, the word Anti-Christ does not occur in Revelation.  In fact the word only appears five times in the collected works of the Bible ... As in the book of Daniel, some of the strongest imagery in Revelation describes a Beast.  ibid.
