If they turned on their television sets and saw a mushroom cloud had replaced New York City, they would see a silver lining in this cloud.  Sam Harris, New York Society for Ethical Culture lecture 2005

It is, therefore, not an exaggeration to say that if the city of New York were suddenly replaced by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ.  It should be blindingly obvious that beliefs of this sort will do little to help us create a durable future for ourselves – socially, economically, environmentally, or geopolitically ... According to the most common interpretation of biblical prophecy, Jesus will return only after things have gone horribly awry.  Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the US government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious.  The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religion dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency.  Sam Harris, Letter to a Christian Nation

How lucky was I: I was born in the right religion, in the right family, in the right religion, in the right time in history, because the world’s ending any minute ... One of these days, someone is going to be right.  Dan Barker, lecture 2001, ‘Losing Faith in Faith’

This is the way the world ends

Not with a bang but a whimper.  T S Eliot, The Hollow Men

Who knows but the world may end to-night?  Robert Browning, Last Ride Together

Doomsday is near; die all, die merrily.  William Shakespeare, I Henry IV IV i 134

Let heaven kiss earth!  Now let not natures hand

Keep the wild flood confined!  Let order die!

And let this world no longer be a stage

To feed contention in a lingring act;

But let one spirit of the first-born Cain

Reign in all bosoms, that each heart being set

On bloody courses, the rude scene may end,

And darkness be the burier of the dead!  William Shakespeare, II Henry IV I i 153-160, Northumberland to Morton

The time will come that foul sin, gathering head,

Shall break into corruption.  ibid.  III i 71-72, King Henry to Warwick

The blood weeps from my heart when I do shape

In forms imaginary th unguided days

And rotten times that you shall look upon.  ibid.  IV iii 58-60, King Henry to Clarence

Stanley Spencer’s Cookham Resurrection depicts the heroic moment at the end of days when all the dead are reborn into paradise.  But as always Stanley effortlessly combines the epic with the everyday.  Dr James Fox, British Masters II BBC 2011

The world will go mad before Jesus comes, and you will not be able to survive in the city at that time because the demons will direct the people and the looters to your doorstep.  John Todd, How to Survive in the End Times

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack of all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.  W B Yeats, The Second Coming

They long for nuclear war.  Because nuclear war will presage the second coming of Christ.  Richard Dawkins, Freethought Radio September 2006

Colorado City – Continuing his rule behind bars, Fundamentalist LDS Church leader Warren Jeffs has told his congregation to prepare for the end of the world before the end of the year.

According to CNN reporter Gary Tuchman, polygamist sect leader Jeffs has declared that the world will end before 2013.

Though church members continue to work, Colorado City’s only grocery store – a gathering place for the town as well – has closed its doors.  Sam Brower, a private investigator who has represented more than 100 former FLDS Church members, told CNN that the closure of the store is a confirmation that Jeffs’ declaration is being taken seriously.

Believers do not talk to reporters and nobody was willing to comment on the declaration.  CNN reported that some FLDS members even used intimidation techniques involving driving large trucks by their cameras.  KSL online article Celeste Rosenlof 28th December 2012, ‘Warren Jeffs Tells FDLS Faithful World Will End Before 2012’
