46) Joe Frazier II Points12: Rumble in the Jungle TV -

Fight two was an anti-climax.  Wary of Frazier’s physical power, Ali was content to contain him, eventually winning on points.  The fight lacked the cutting edge of a title decider because neither fighter held the crown.  Rumble in the Jungle

47) George Foreman ***** KO8: Daily Telegraph - Muhammad Ali - Ali or Tyson: Who Was Greatest? TV - Ringside: Top Ten Heavyweights TV - Howard Bingham - When We Were Kings 1996 - Harry Carpenter & UK Fight Commentary TV - US Fight Commentary TV -

How the Rumble in the Jungle Saved George Foreman from Himself: The Rumble in the Jungle was, quite simply, the most famous fight of all time.  Thirty years ago this week [October 2004], in the early hours of October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali fought George Foreman, the reigning heavyweight champion of the world, in a football stadium in Kinshasa, Zaire.  And history was made.

For seven rounds, Foreman – a one-man demolition derby who had ended his eight previous fights within two rounds – pummelled Ali.  To the horrified amazement of an onlooking world, the 32-year-old Ali abandoned the dazzling footwork that had made him a boxing legend.  Instead, he leaned back against the ropes, absorbing the punishment meted out by Foreman, the bigger, stronger, younger man.

And then, in the eighth round, a miracle happened.  Ali, sensing that Foreman had punched himself out, finally went on the attack with a barrage of left and right hooks, sending Foreman plunging to the floor.  Daily Telegraph article October 2004

If you were surprised when Nixon resigned, just watch what happens when I whup Foreman’s behind!  Muhammad Ali, cited When We Were Kings 1996

You been hearing about how bad I am since you were a little kid with mess in your pants!  Tonight, I’m gonna whip you till you cry like a baby.  Muhammad Ali, to George Foreman pre-fight

I’m going to eat raw meat.  Muhammad Ali, pre-fight

I told you all, all of my critics.  I told you I’m the greatest of all times ... Staying on the ropes is a beautiful thing with a heavyweight when you make him shoot his best shots and you know he’s not hitting you ... I told you: floats like a butterfly, stinks like a bee.  His hand can’t hit what his eyes can’t see ... Muhammad Ali, post-fight press conference

He [Ali] was Africa’s greatest hero.  For Foreman the event was a nightmare.  He was uncomfortable in Africa, and while Ali would walk among the people, Foreman would hire attack dogs to keep people away.   Ali or Tyson: Who Was Greatest?

Big George was considered to be the greatest puncher in Heavyweight history ... An older Ali would outbox and occasionally outmuscle the formidable champ – a man who had destroyed Joe Frazier just a year earlier.  Ringside: Top 10 Heavyweights

Rumble in the Jungle happened in 1974 with George Foreman.  And this was the first time that there was a big Heavyweight title fight like this involving Ali [who] was taken out of the country and went back to Africa.  Howard Bingham, friend and photographer
