If they turned on their television sets and saw a mushroom cloud had replaced New York City, they would see a silver lining in this cloud. Sam Harris, New York Society for Ethical Culture lecture 2005
It is, therefore, not an exaggeration to say that if the city of New York were suddenly replaced by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ. It should be blindingly obvious that beliefs of this sort will do little to help us create a durable future for ourselves – socially, economically, environmentally, or geo-politically ... According to the most common interpretation of biblical prophecy, Jesus will return only after things have gone horribly awry. Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the US government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religion dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency. Sam Harris, Letter to a Christian Nation
This slow-motion march towards apocalypse is assured. Chris Hedges, lecture New York Sanctuary for Independent Media New York 10 November 2017
The followers of Christ were told they were living in the end of days. Professor Bettany Hughes, Divine Women II: Handmaids of the Gods, BBC 2012
Paul was wrong about the Apocalypse: the world didn’t end. ibid.
Ancient calendars foretold a deadly countdown. A galactic alignment triggering a wave of natural disasters. Some said our planet was headed for extinction. Others believed in another agenda, one even more profound. Ancient Aliens s4e2: The Doomsday Prophecies
Yucatan Peninsula: One of the world’s greatest ancient civilisations, the Maya … The Maya consisted of around 15 to 20 million people … The Maya were one of the first civilisations to develop a written language, use modern mathematical methods, and build huge celestial observatories. ibid.
Why 2012? Why did this date hold a special significance? ibid.
The Anti-Christ. The false messiah. A child of Satan. The word Anti-Christ first appears in the New Testament. In this ancient text a prophecy states that the Anti-Christ, the beast, will come to seduce mankind. Believers say he will usher in the end of days. Armageddon. Nostradamus Effect s1e1: The Third Anti-Christ, History 2009
Leonardo was haunted by recurring images of natural disaster, and man's own inhumanity to his fellow man. He wrote of his fears, of a coming watery apocalypse in what he called his riddles. These warnings imbue his art. Nostradamus Effect s1e2: Da Vinci’s Armageddon
It’s a date that’s become synonymous with the end: the 21st of December 2012. Why do so many people believe that on that day the world will experience an unprecedented cataclysm? 2012 followers point to unusual correlations across various diverse cultures, many of which seem to predict that will be the year when mankind will meet its demise. Nostradamus Effect s1e3: Extinction 2012
Ancient cultures such as the Maya and the Hopi, the Hindu and the Chinese, modern science, computer experts, and the 16th century seer Nostradamus all hint at a doomsday scenario convergence in 2012. ibid.
The most significant of the Mayan calendars was the Long Count. This tracks a 5125-year era beginning on the 11th August 3114 B.C. and ending on the 21st December 2012. Did the Mayans intend this date to represent the end of time? Or is the final date of their calendar simply indicating that it has to be set to a new cycle, a new Long Count? ibid.
An American shaman embarked on a different type of cosmic journey in the 1970s. This counter-culture hero was searching for answers to the human condition. His name was Terence McKenna. And he combined complex mathematics, Chinese philosophy and psychedelic drugs into a controversial form of prophecy. His quest eventually led him to conclude that just as the Mayans predicted over a thousand years earlier, man’s end was destined for 2012 ... Use of these recreational drugs led to Terence McKenna’s ground-breaking work: Time-Wave Theory. ibid.
Newton was convinced that he’d uncovered a secret Biblical puzzle that had been concealed in sacred texts and that he alone understood when Armageddon would come. Nostradamus Effect s1e5: The Apocalypse Code
According to interpreters Newton’s papers show that his first step into Biblical decoding involved passages that described the Temple of Solomon. The temple prophecies are a critical clue to all of Newton’s doomsday calculations, and how he arrived at 2060 for the date of Armageddon. ibid.
A temple of geometric precision and symmetry built in one of the holiest places on Earth. For many this reconstruction of an ancient monument is the fulfilment of a prophecy. Its location is Israel. The year 2060. The prophet who foresaw this is one of the greatest scientists who ever lived. He forewarned that completion of this great temple would herald the arrival of the Anti-Christ and the end of the world ... Isaac Newton was one of the world’s greatest scientific geniuses and the father of Psychics. ibid.
The mystery centres around a manuscript in Rome called the Nostradamus Vatinicia Code. The prophecies of Nostradamus. Since the title bears the renowned prophet’s name, many believe he must be the author. But no record exists of Nostradamus ever publishing such a manuscript. And so the identity of the writer remains an open question. Nostradamus Effect s1e6: Son of Nostradamus
Of the eighty images said to foretell our doom seven form a code specifying the time of the Apocalypse. ibid.
Does the value in the manuscript lie purely in its provenance? For years it was assumed the author was the most renowned seer of all: Nostradamus the Elder. But the evidence suggests this may not in fact be the case. The creator of this work that portends Armageddon – father or son? ibid.
Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, exposes a chilling timeline. Many accept it as a countdown, chronicling God’s master-plan to end the world. The markers of this timeline are the seven seals. Some say these seals are being broken today. Nostradamus Effect s1e7: Secrets of the Seven Seals
1917: just outside the village of Fatima, Portugal, three shepherd children claim to experience visions of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, the apparition shared with them three cryptic secrets about mankind’s dark future. Shrouded in mystery for eighty-three years, the final part of the prophecy may have foretold the ultimate cataclysm: a nuclear third world war in our lifetime. Nostradamus Effect s1e8: Fatima’s Lost Prophecy
But the great pyramid might be just one expression of this purported prophecy. Some believe these hieroglyphs from a text called The Book of the Dead also foretell that the end is nigh. There may even be a third prophetic source: a recently rediscovered document called the Kolbrin Bible some interpreters of which believe predicts a nuclear holocaust. Nostradamus Effect s1e10: Doomsday Hieroglyphs
12,673. Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack of all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity. W B Yeats, The Second Coming
