★ Libya & Libyans

Throughout the course of history there’s been many viciously cruel dictators.  But few as deranged as Muammar Gaddafi.  Yet for over 40 years the Libyan leader terrifies, tortures and torments the world with one horrific act after another.  This is the story of the Middle East’s longest serving dictator.  Evolution of Evil s1e1: Gaddafi: Mad Dog of the Middle East, History 2015

Suddenly the colonel’s convey is hit by a Nato air-strike forcing the once almighty-tyrant to take refuge in a sewer pipe.  But how has it come to this?  ibid.

When the demonstrators did take to the streets, they were confronted with organised violence from government mercenaries.  ibid.

From the outset, Gaddafi’s Libya was in a state of constant revolution.  The bloodless coup in 1969 that ten years after independence brought him to power was seen as a popular revolution sweeping away the corrupt pro-Western monarchy of King Idris.  ibid.

By the middle of August Gaddafi had disappeared from TV and was heard only via infrequent radio broadcasts.  We now know that he was on the run living house to house, street to street.  ibid.

Colonel Gaddafi’s 42-year reign in Libya is under threat.  The uprising known as the Arab Spring is spreading in the region.  Gaddafi is moving billions of dollars in cash out of Libya as a war chest for his private use.  He tells the Libyan people he will stay in power and vows to fight to the death.  Ten months later Gaddafi is captured and killed.  He dies the richest man on Earth, worth an estimated $150 billion.  But a large part of his fortune has disappeared.  ibid.
