On 15th April 1989 football fans headed to Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield to watch Liverpool play Nottingham Forest in the semi-final of the FA Cup.  Thousands of supporters converged on the stadium.  Hillsborough Remembered, History 2009 

 

Hillsborough had two standing areas at opposite ends of the stadium.  ibid.
