July 1953 The Forgotten War: ‘Most of us when we came back really felt like we had not accomplished much. The American people generally, most of ‘em, really didn’t even know where we’d been.’ Korea: The Never Ending War, US soldier, BBC 2019
What a country calls its vital economic interests are not the things which enable its citizens to live, but the things which enable it to make war. Simone Weil
Wars are expensive. Jon Witterick, lecture Get out of Debt Free, PSTV 2011
Politics is war without bloodshed, while war is politics with bloodshed. Mao Zedong, lecture 1938
This insult may plunge our two countries into war. Duck Soup 1933 starring Groucho Marx & Harpo Marx & Chico Marx & Zeppo Marx & Margaret Dumont & Louis Calhern & Raquel Torres & Edgar Kennedy & Edmund Breese & Edwin Maxwell et al, director Leo McCarey
You’re all being fed this bullshit that we’ve reached Peak Oil. That we’re running out of oil ... There is more oil on this planet than we know what to do with. One of the whole purposes of the Gulf Wars was to keep the Iraqi oil in the ground. ’Cause there is so much oil in Iraq that when Saddam was running the show there the concern was that Saddam, because he had so much oil, would put it on the market, and keep the price suppressed. And the US needs a high price in oil because oil is still currently just about traded in US dollars. And they need other countries to have US dollars so that they can buy US goods – arms. The US only has one product that it manufactures today in any volume – arms. Military equipment. That’s why the US needs war. It needs war because that’s the only industry that it’s got. Ian R Crane, New World Order lecture, Liverpool 2008
Hi There Dear John. Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1963 starring Peter Sellers & George C Scott & Sterling Haydenn & Keenan Wynn & Slim Pickens & Peter Bull & James Earl Jones & Tracy Reed & Shane Rimmer et al, director Stanley Kubric, names imprinted on nuclear bombs
I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids. ibid. Jack Ripper
Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said? He said, ‘War is too important to be left to the generals.’ When he said that, fifty years ago, he may have been right. But now war is too important to be left to the politicians. They have neither the time nor inclination for strategic thought. ibid.
Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is the war room. ibid. president
Good, then. Well then, as you say, we’re both coming through fine. Good. Well, it's good that you’re fine, and – and I’m fine. I agree with you. It’s great to be fine. [laughs] Now then, Dmitri, you know how we’ve always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the bomb. The BOMB, Dmitri. The hydrogen bomb. Well now, what happened is, uh, one of our base commanders, he had a sort of – Well, he went a little funny in the head. You know. Just a little funny. And uh, he went and did a silly thing. ibid. president
It’s a friendly call. Of course it’s a friendly call. Listen, if it wasn’t friendly, you probably wouldn’t have even got it. They will not reach their targets for at least another hour. I am, I am positive, Dmitri. Listen, I’ve been all over this with your Ambassador. It is not a trick. Well, I’ll tell you. We’d like to give your Air Staff a complete rundown on the targets, the flight plans, and the defensive systems of the planes. ibid.
Perhaps it might be better, Mr President, if you were more concerned with the American people, than with your image in the history books. ibid. Turgidson
Muffley: How long would you have to stay down there?
Dr Strangelove: Well let’s see now ah ... cobalt thorium G ... Radioactive halflife of uh ... I would think that uh ... possibly uh ... one hundred years. ibid.
Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn’t that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Dr Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious ... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Russian Ambassador: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor. ibid.
Peace Is Our Profession. ibid. motto of 843th Bomb Wing Strategic Command
Even if you irrationally decide to go to war it doesn’t mean you have to fight it in a widely irrational fashion ... Objective studies indicate that the post-war environment while hostile to human life, more hostile than the pre-war environment, will not be so hostile as to preclude normal and happy lives. Herman Kahn, former RAND & defense consultant
In nuclear war all men are cremated equal. Dexter Gordon
The way to win an atomic war is to make certain it never starts. Omar Bradley, American general
The dirty little secret is that both Houses of Congress are irrelevant. America’s domestic policy is now being run by Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve. America's foreign policy is now being run by the International Monetary Fund. When the President decides to go to war, he no longer needs a declaration of war from Congress. Robert Reich, USA Today 7th January 1999
In any war, there is a concealment of certain kinds of setbacks because it’s propaganda for the enemy. Kate Adie
Happiness lies in conquering one’s enemies, in driving them in front of oneself, in taking their property, in savouring their despair, in outraging their wives and daughters. Genghis Khan
An empire founded by war has to maintain itself by war. Charles de Montesquieu

Amongst the Christian ranks are two zealous orders of warrior monks known as the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller. To Saladin they are the ultimate enemy. ibid.
Two hundred and thirty detested Templars and Hospitallers are handed over to Muslim clerics. Again, Saladin acts to Muslim rules of war. ibid.
They are granted freedom from slavery on condition they quit the Holy Land for ever. Many return to Europe with tales of Saladin – a Muslim warrior with greater chivalry than any European knight. ibid.
Saladin’s legacy of mercy and compassion is echoed today on the modern battlefield. ibid.
