Jerusalem had been shaped and mapped by the religions of its rulers.  ibid.

They are the main group of Generation Jihad.  The people who are out there who spend all this time collecting and assimilating propaganda from Al Qaeda and who are riding right on the line between activity that is defended by freedom of speech and certainly legitimate research activity to going and putting these ideas into action.  Evan Kohlmann, terrorism consultant

It’s the fusion of things that never really went along with each other: conservative religious beliefs, high technology, social networking on-line.  It’s a generational thing too.  You do see older people getting involved with this.  But the real people pushing this forward are young people.  They are Al Qaeda’s entrepreneurs.  They’re the entrepreneurs of Jihad.  They’re taking these ideas and innovating.  Evan Kohlmann

The Muslims see the extension of Jihad as a war liberating the infidels from their infidelity and a privilege for them.  Bat Ye’or, author The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under Islam

Muslim hospitals had separate wards for patients suffering from different kinds of disease.  Even mental illness was treated.  ibid.

In Europe anti-Muslim sentiment simmered.  By 1095 it reached the boiling point: Pope Urban II spent most of that year travelling through France imploring his feudal lords to unite in a campaign of bloodshed.  ibid.

Days of incomprehensible horror ... The Crusaders entered Jerusalem.  ibid.

Saladin’s men set fire to the tall grass.  And a strong wind carried the flames into the Christian encampment.  ibid.

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!  Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.  The effects are apparent in many countries.  Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.  A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.  The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.  Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
