Woodstock: I’ve never seen so many hippy-types in one place.  The Festival that Rocked the World, Sky Arts 2019

Flower Power was a long way from the Mods and the Rockers.  Suggs, Teen Spirit: The Mods and the Rockers, Yesterday 2011

There are colonies of hippies springing up in most American cities.  The Sixties s1e10: Sex, Drugs and Rock-n-Roll, contemporary quote

We would all like to live an uncluttered life.  ibid.  contemporary hippy

They say it will be a summer of love, a great pilgrimage.  ibid.  contemporary news report

1967: The Summer of Love: Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll.  But not all peace, love and understanding.  The explosion that summer came from a mix of naive idealism, mysticism, radical politics and chemistry.  All bubbling to the surface on the west coast of the United States.  The Summer of Love: How Hippies Changed the World I: The Making of a Hippy, BBC 2017

This is the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  It’s the place where the hippy was born on January 14th 1967.  San Francisco’s underground newspaper Oracle put a call-out for all strands of what it called the counter-culture to gather here for a party like no party in history.  A party that would change the world for ever.  ibid.

The hippies discovered a wonder-drug called LSD.  ibid.

Along with the New Left, Berkeley was also home to those experimenting with alternative lifestyles and mind-expanding drugs.  ibid.

San Francisco was a flame of protest, radical ideas and acid.  The American authorities were horrified and banned LSD.  ibid.

No sooner had the party began then it started to unravel.  The Summer of Love: How Hippies Changed the World II: Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

June 1967 and San Francisco was on the brink on a hippy revolution.  ibid.

At the heart of the community were an anarchist group of artists and radicals called The Diggers.  ibid.

The MC5 were closely connected to the White Panther Party.  ibid.

The most extreme of these were the Weather Underground.  ibid.

One of the models for would-be revolutionaries were the Marxist-Leninist Black Panther Party under the joint leadership of the charismatic Fred Hampton.  Their armed struggle was seen as inspirational by other guerrilla groups.  ibid.

Jimi Hendrix’s performance of Star Spangled Banner in the Woodstock film both encapsulated the distorted dystopian vision of nation caught up in a war it didn’t believe in and at the same time was a requiem for a political movement that was not to be.  ibid.

Make love, not war.  Hippy quote

Drop acid, not bombs.  Hippy quote

Far out, man.  Hippy quote

The ancient goals to be followed can be defined in modern terms in the metaphors of the present as Turn on, Tune in and Drop out.  Timothy Leary

The moon dust in your lungs, stars in your eyes
You are a child of the cosmos, a ruler of the skies.  Emma Roeske, You Are Here

If youre going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If youre going to San Francisco
Youre gonna meet some gentle people there …  Scott McKenzie, song ‘If You’re Going to San Francisco

It is nothing new.  We have a private revolution going on.  A revolution of individuality and diversity that can only be private.  Upon becoming a group movement, such a revolution ends up with imitators rather than participants … It is essentially a striving for realization of onerelationship to life and other people.  Bob Stubbs, Unicorn Philosophy

The hippies were heirs to a long line of bohemians that includes William Blake, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, German Hesse, Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde, Aldous Huxley, Utopian movements like the Rosicrucians and the Theosophists, and most directly the Beatniks.  Hippies emerged from a society that had produced birth-control pills, a counterproductive war in Vietnam, the liberation and idealism of the civil rights movement, feminism, homosexual rights, FM radio, mass-produced LSD, a strong economy, and a huge number of baby-boom teenagers.  These elements allowed the hippies to have a mainstream impact that dwarfed that of the Beats and earlier avant-garde cultures.  Danny Goldberg, In Defense of Hippies

When I came to California it was the mecca of the world.  Every young person on the planet wanted to be here.  It was the heart of the hippie activity, and it was our culture, our generation, expressing itself at its most festive, so it was a real magnet for the young people … with the love-ins and so on.  Joni Mitchell, cited Los Angeles Time 7 June 2009

Every cloud is a silver line
But you still need the moon to shine
And we dont care about it
Is there something that you forgot
And you wish you could stop the clock
Because you cant live without it.

We dont have a clue
Cause were three miles high
And we rot as dust and feathers fly
And we cant come down
Cause wed burst our little bubble on the ground
Whoa oh oh …  Travis, Three Miles High

‘The hippies were the real punks.’  Punk: Attitude, Chrissie Hynde, Sky Arts 2017

August ’69 – hundreds of thousands of us descend on Bethel, near Woodstock, north of New York City.  Thirty-two bands, three days of peace, love and music.  Our words.  Our footage.  The Festival that Rocked the World, captions, Sky Arts 2019

It was adventurous.  It was dangerous.  It was fun.  It was eye-opening … There was so much weed, man.’  ibid.  dude

This is what a pilgrimage must be like.’  ibid.

Interviewer: We’ve got a guy with a lamb.  Did you come here for a reason?   ibid.

Dude: Yeah … Well, this is a revolution … A revolution of a lot of people who refuse to have anything to do with killing.  And here there is vegetarian food.  ibid.  dude with lamb

This was hundreds of thousands of young people on a hillside and without the grown-ups in control.  ibid.  dude with lamb

I’ve never seen so many hippy-types in one place.  ibid.  woman

By the end of that first day the rain started.  ibid.

On Saturday there was no food left.  ibid.

Doctors in the audience ended up donating their time.  ibid.

Orange Barrels called Sunshine was one of the most popular forms of LSD.  ibid.

The hippies wanted peace and love.  We wanted Ferraris, blondes and switchblades.  Alice Cooper
