Georgia has a particular problem with breakaway states. After the collapse of the USSR Georgia became independent. But three parts of the country – South Ossetia, Abhazia and Adjara – then broke away from Georgia. Conflict broke out, thousands were killed, and the whole region has suffered ever since.
